Peter Norris Interview
1) How long have you been making art?
I started going to pottery classes at The Anglia Ruskin University, Brentwood in 1983 and took a Ceramics in Education Degree between 2003 & 2006.
2) What best describes your kind of art and what drives you?
My work is in the long tradition of Studio Pottery, ie one off pieces. I like to sometimes combine a few techniques on each piece such as Wheel throwing: Slip casting: hand modelling: and decoration. I have always been driven by the need to produce elegantly designed and finely finished work.
3) How Has it evolved?
It has evolved from my precision and design engineering background. Also I have evolved a number of different designs and finishes over the years.
4) Is there a medium or technique you have yet to try?
I have worked on many techniques including terra sigillata; Piercing and Raku. I intend to develop these techniques further.
5) What would your IDEAL solo exhibition be like and where?
A retrospective of the last 20 years and at The Whitechapel Art Gallery.
6) What do you like most about the art world?
The range from amateur artists showing at local village halls, to major exhibitions at The Royal Academy.
7) Which artist historically or currently has influenced you?
Historically, Lucy Rie; Hans Coper; & the St Ives "lot". Currently, Grayson Perry and Peter Beard.
8) Choose 1 favourite piece of art.
"Our Father" (The Pilgrim) circa 2007. Grayson Perry
