Katrina Rose Interview
1. How long have you been painting?
Five years.
2. What genre best describes the kind of art you create?
I am a colourist – colour is my chief motivation.
3. How has your artwork evolved since you began?
I began with a ‘blue’ period – seascapes, skies, land and cityscapes. I moved on to still life, abstract, flowers and structures. Recently I have returned to seas, skies and landscapes, where I am learning to express myself more loosely.
4. Is there a medium or technique you prefer to use more than others?
I paint mostly in acrylic but have begun using oil which brings its own challenges. Also experimenting with a palette knife, creating a more immediate effect.
5. What would your ideal solo exhibition be like and where would it be held?
For me an ideal exhibition would be filled with people gaining pleasure from my colourful, impressionistic paintings, in a bright and airy gallery setting, strangely reminiscent of the Candid Art Galleries.
6. What do you like most about the art world?
That there is sufficient space for all artists to follow their own personal creativity.
7. Which artists either historically or current, have influenced you the most?
Claude Monet, for his amazing use of colour, and Ken Howard RA for his magical ability to create light.
8. If you had to choose just one, what would be your favourite painting/artwork?
That’s a difficult choice. “Water Lilies” 1908 by Claude Monet, for its refreshing and reflecting tones.
9. Where did you sell your first artwork and how did it feel?
In a quirky hillside gallery in the Algarve, Portugal. It felt wonderful!
10. What are you planning to exhibit at the New Artist Fair in March 2014?
A selection of my work in acrylic, oil and with a palette knife.
