Jemimah Canegrati Interview
1) How long have you been making art?
I've been making Art since I was in my mid to late teens. I had my first solo exhibition of Skyscapes aged 18 in West Yorkshire.
2) What genre best describes the kind of art which you create?
Impressionist for my Oil pieces & illustrative when creating small series in mix media.
3) How has your artwork evolved since you began?
My work evolves on a bi-monthly period I feel. It's a very exciting feeling - knowing I have mastered a technique I long to achieve. The first Oils I created however are my favourite. I think the honesty & confidence in some brush strokes really shows how far I have come. Now I am more cautious & at times hesitant & tend to think more about the way I create work.
4) Is there a medium or technique that you have yet to try but would like to?
I'd like to try sculpture probably either in stone or in clay. I'd love to have the opportunity to do this.
5) What would your ideal solo exhibition be like and where would it be held?
My ideal exhibition would be held in Paris or in Germany at a small gallery, and it would run for 7 days & then would tour for 3 months around Europe.
6) If you could, what would you change about the art world?
The great thing about the Art world is that firstly it exists but artists need to be represented better. The art world needs to be able to involve viewers & engage & to educate & not isolate. I think classical genres need to be respected more than I feel they are & to not be so quickly replaced by modern art all art is important & no type should be more greatly appreciated than any other.
7) Which artists either historically or current, have influenced you the most?
The Artists who influence me the most are Toulouse, Schiele & Klimt as well as Katsushika Hokusai. I really love Pollock for modern art.
8) If you had to choose just one, what would be your favourite painting/artwork?
My favourite painting by an Artist is by Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun, A self-portrait embracing her daughter. It sums up portraiture at its simplest & evokes sweetness. My own favourite piece of Art by myself is a recent oil draft of my son & daughter.
9) Where did you sell your first artwork and how did it feel?
I had a small exhibition in London after my first solo exhibition when I was 18 & the elation & pride I felt was indescribable knowing someone wanted my work. I still feel very proud even now when I make a sale.
10) What are you planning to exhibit at the New Artist Fair in March 2014?
At the New Artist Fair exhibition, I will be exhibiting my series of Oil paintings including heavenly creatures, small garden birds & my surrealist series of mix media & Inks, called Beautiful Nightmare.
