FAD magazine Interview Oliver Norris

We caught up with Oliver Norris founder of New Artist Fair to find out more on the upcoming edition. |
1 What is the New Artist Fair all about?
We came up with the idea of having a group art exhibition following Leah's graduation from the Courtauld in 2010 after it became apparent that breaking into the London Art Market was very difficult as an individual artist. We knew so many talented artists of all ages and backgrounds but they weren't yet gallery represented and were desperate to get their art seen, so we launched the New Artist Fair in March 2011 to provide a platform for any new artist who wanted to get their work seen by London's art loving populous and make consistent sales.
Now in our 6th year New Artist Fair is well established and our regular visitors and collectors know they are going to see a massive variety of genres and styles from many kinds of talented artists. We exhibit International as well as local and UK artists, all of which create the highest calibre artwork in their particular genre at our events.
2 How many artists are you showing?
Currently our September exhibition list of artists is up to 112. Because of the numbers involved there are always some changes, but I expect the final list to be around that amount which will be the perfect number of exhibiting artists for the space.
3 You have a new art prize this year, can you tell us all about it?
This is an exciting new award for our exhibiting artists and the chance for our visitors to be more involved, whether they are coming to invest in some art or just because they love coming to our events.
Each visitor will be invited to vote for their favourite exhibiting artist in the Voting Book at the payments desk and after the exhibition has finished and we have counted all the votes, the winner will be crowned 'New Artist of the Year 2016' and will also receive £1,000 to go towards their art career.
4 This is your 6th year, what has changed?
More artists participating; the new artists joining the 40 re-exhibiting artists this year are extremely talented and I can't wait to see them do well. We also have portrait artist Heloise Toop and children's author Ann Duggans Robson painting live throughout the exhibition. We've got something new this year; seating installations for sale, created by the Edible Bus Stop. As usual we have free drinks at our Opening Reception, but this year throughout the weekend there will be coffee and cake available to buy supplied by our friends at The Cult House UK. But the real surprise is seeing art of the highest quality being sold at affordable prices directly from the artists. Most of the exhibitors will be at the exhibition so buyers can get to know them and can ask questions about their work and process, helping them to make a more informed purchase.
5 Any artists you are particularly excited about showing this year?
I'm looking forward to seeing Kumo and D13EGO's work with the naked eye, they both use spray paint and are influenced by street art and I believe they will be stars of the future.
Re-exhibiting artists Pietro Alessandro Trovato creates immaculate, highly collectible still life paintings, and Mia Hawk creates amazing colourful original drawings of quirky characters which she also reproduces on prints and T Shirts, so this means collectors on a smaller budget can easily get on the ladder of collecting her work.
Leah Michelle has an incredible new collection of work inspired by Gerhard Richter; she has several collectors who buy her work through DegreeArt.com, so it will be great for our visitors to pick up one of her new pieces in person with the knowledge that this is another artist who's work will rise in value.
I'm also particularly excited about photographic artist Alexander James who I was recently on a judging panel with. He's going to be exhibiting his private series on paper; they are museum grade prints all from sold out editions, making them quite the catch.
It's also always very interesting to see what artists are going to show with us after having a break, fine artist & sculpturist Heather Burwell and figure painter Enrico Meucci are both back this year so i can't wait to see what they are going to bring to the event.
We all have different tastes but our job at the New Artist Fair is to make sure that we exhibit something for everyone.
