Dean Moone Interview
1) How long have you been making art?
DM - I studied art at school but have only been making art seriously for just over two years.
2) What genre best describes what you do?
DM - I believe me style of painting falls into the bracket of naive art as I am self taught.
3) How has your artwork evolved since you began?
DM - Since I started painting I have experimented with sculpture using scrap lead and copper which I enjoyed a lot . This has also encouraged me to recycle other material like MDF and ply which I can paint on instead of expensive canvases.
4) Is there a medium or technique that you have yet to try but would like to?
DM - I have always worked with oil and just recently I have experimented with acrylic. I found this was OK for initial backgrounds and very small details but I still prefers the freedom you get from working with oil.
5) What would your ideal solo exhibition be like and where would it be held?
DM - My ideal solo exhibition would be at the Tate modern but instead of champagne and canapés it would be crisps and lager.
6) What do you like most about the art world?
DM - I like the fact that there are no boundaries, unlike the building trade where everything has to be just so and accurate. That is why I enjoy the freedom to use your imagination and let your mind run free.
7) What inspired you to create the painting 'The Road'?
DM - The idea for that particular picture came after I had sold a couple of paintings and that apart from the building trade there was a new goal to achieve as an artist and the long road I must go down to make that happen. Hopefully the New Artist Fair London Exhibition in September is another step towards that goal.
8) What or who inspires you to make art?
DM - A lot of my art comes from feelings or emotions ,especially around the time of my back problems. There is also a certain amount of escapism and fantasy which is fun and something i think we all need. My inspirations are everyday situations and subjects, I combine my building trade experience with my creativity in sketching my thoughts to capture an idea, selecting materials I have to hand (often building waste donated by fellow builders and friends), and then applying diverse construction techniques to bring physicality to my vision.
9) Where did you sell your first painting and how did it feel?
DM - I sold my first painting just over two years ago and it was nice to earn some cash for something I enjoy but it was even better knowing that someone thought my work was good enough to go up on their wall.
10) What are your plans for the New Artist Fair in September?
DM - I plan to be around as much as possible over the weekend and meet new people. I hope to sell more art but its also nice to get different peoples opinion on the work and hopefully they can tell others.
